Cornell Wins With Landslide for Weekend Sweep

In a relentless effort by Cornell, the women's ice hockey team secured a 7-0 win with three two-goal scorers against #9 Harvard at Lynah Rink, Saturday afternoon. Junior Lindsay Browning anchored the Big Red's defensive efforts as the goaltender earned her sixth shutout of the season after turning away all 15 of the Crimson's shots on goal.

During what was almost a scoreless first period, senior Grace Graham scored the first goal of the night with 1:19 left in the period. Receiving a pass from Graham, senior Paige Lewis took a shot on net. The goalie saved the initial shot but was not able to stop Graham from tipping the loose puck past the goal line.

Coming back from the break, sophomore Gillis Frechette scored the Big Red's second goal just 25 seconds after puck drop. In a skirmish for the puck, Graham sent it to open ice for Lewis to pick up. In the middle of skating backward for the open-angle, Frechette received the puck from Lewis and shot it right into the net, directly in front of the goalie, for a Cornell goal.

Not even two minutes later, senior Jaime Bourbonnais made it a three-goal game. Junior Willow Slobodzian caught a loose puck from Frechette in the slot and upon seeing Bourbonnais, past the puck. From the blue line Bourbonnais slap shot the puck passed the goalie, just inside the left post, for the goal.

On the second power play of the night, Frechette scored her second goal of the night. Her goal marks the first of three straight power play goals by the Big Red. As a pass came from junior Devon Facchinato, Frechette brought the puck to the left side of the slot and dumped it into the right side of the net.

At 13:38 in the second period, freshman Izzy Daniel scored her first goal of the night. Just 22 seconds into the 5-on-4 advantage, Slobodzian took a shot from the top of the slot. As it was saved, the rebound headed towards Daniel who only needed one touch to send the puck into the goal. With five unanswered goals, Cornell headed into the second and final intermission.

At 15:05, Harvard earned its third penalty of the game, and 46 seconds later Daniel scored the Big Red's sixth goal. Assisted once again by Slobodzian and Facchinato, Daniel skated from the goal line around the face-off circle and to the opposite side of the slot to dump the puck into the net.

Graham scored what proved to be the final goal of the game with 3:35 on the clock. Sophomore Athena Song sent the puck to Graham, sitting behind the net, and the senior wrapped around the goal and snuck the puck into the corner passed the goalie.

The unstoppable offensive effort by Cornell was backed by the defense. Junior Lindsay Browning earned her seventh shutout in her career, sixth on the season. With seven career shutouts, Browning is now tied for seventh in program history.

The Big Red return next week with a double-header against Colgate. Cornell will host the Raiders at Lynah Rink on Friday (Jan. 24) at 3 p.m. before traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. for a 3 p.m. puck drop on Saturday (Jan. 25).
