Brown Inches Closer .500 ECAC Hockey Record, Edge Union

The Brown men's hockey team jumped out to a three-goal lead and held off a late attack as the Bears topped Union, 3-2, in ECAC action Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown improved to 4-15-0 overall and 4-8-0 in the ECAC. Union dropped to 6-17-3, 4-9-1. Brown outshot the Dutchmen, 23-19.

Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) led the Bears with two points, while Cole Quisenberry (Denver, Colo.) and Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) also scored for the home team. Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 17 saves in the win, while Darion Hanson stopped 20 shots on the other end.

"I thought we played with urgency, tenacity and determination from the drop of the puck," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "You get rewarded when you play that way. It was a very important game. We needed two points at home, so it was a crucial win."

Brown scored twice in a 1:13 span early in the opening period to jump out to a two-goal lead, starting with a power-play goal at 4:50. After James Crossman (Denver, Colo.) blasted a shot that trickled through Hanson, Quisenberry finished the play at the goal line for his second of the season.

Giuttari added to the lead just over one minute later, when he corralled a pass from Connor Marshall (Parkland, Fla.) at the point, and then ripped a shot through traffic and into the back of the net for his third of the season. Brown outshot the Dutchmen by a 13-5 margin in the first frame.

Jallen scored the lone goal of the middle period at 11:13 for the three-goal advantage. Colin Burston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) skated into the offensive end and quickly snapped a pass to the front of the net, where Jallen was in the right spot, as he tipped a shot into the net for his team-high ninth goal of the season.

Union made it interesting to close the game after the Dutchmen pulled Hanson with 3:30 remaining. Liam Robertson and Brandon Estes scored back-to-back extra-attacker goals to cut the lead to one with 1:02 left to play, but the Bears held on for the victory.

Crossman led the Bears with four shots.

Brown will return to action in two weeks at St. Lawrence (1/31) and Clarkson (2/1).
