Junior Liam Grande scored the game-winning goal with 2:09 remaining in the game, to lift Princeton to a 5-3 win over No. 16 Union in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series. It is the Tigers' first win over Union since March 15, 2009 and first win at Messa Rink since Nov. 15, 2008.
It was a three-goal third period that pushed Princeton (16-12-4) ahead after trailing 3-2 after two periods.
Princeton's No. 1 ranked power-play converted on its first attempt to knot the game 3-3 in the third. It came on junior Ryan Kuffner's 29th goal of the season, which is now the Princeton record for goals in a season, surpassing Jeff Halpern's 28 from 2007-08. It took the power play 27 seconds as Max Véronneau found a racing Jackson Cressey heading to the goal and he saw Kuffner open for the backdoor goal.
Grande's third goal of the season put the Tigers ahead 4-3 with a quick transition after an outlet by junior defender Josh Teves. Junior Jeremy Germain trapped the puck in and Grande came up the left side boards and dangled past his defender to the slot and shot high glove side for the tally.
