Penner Scores as Colgate Edged at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Colgate men's ice hockey team put up a valiant fight Saturday night as freshman Tyler Penner (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored his second goal of the season but the Raiders fell to the nationally ranked No. 4/5 Union Dutchmen 3-1 at Messa Rink.

Penner's goal, also the second of his career, came shortly after Union's opening goal to tie the game early in the first period.

Freshman goaltender Colton Point (North Bay, Ontario) recorded 22 saves on the 24 shots he faced in one of his best appearances of the saves. The Raiders held the one of ECAC Hockey's best offenses to just 25 shots along with their two goals in Saturday's game.

Union claimed a 1-0 lead with 14:37 to go in the first period as Nick DeSimone put home a blast from the point. Ryan Walker found DeSimone at the right point who first the puck through traffic past Colgate goaltender Colton Point (North Bay, Ontario).

The Raiders tied the game three and a half minutes later on Penner's second goal of the season. Brett Corkey (Calgary, Alberta) carried the puck into the offensive zone and found Hunter Racine (Ottawa, Ontario) with a pass. Racine's shot was blocked but Penner snuck in from behind the end line to swipe the puck past a sprawling Jake Kupsky to tie the game, 1-1.

Colgate dominated much of the play in the second period, outshooting Union 11-7 in the period, but neither team managed to find the back of the net.

After trading chances for much of the third period, Mike Vecchione scored his first goal against the Raiders since the 2014-15 season to give Union a 2-1 lead with 7:21 to play in the final frame. J.C. Brassard's shot was saved by Point but the rebound eked out to Spencer Foo in the slot. Getting in position for a Foo shot, Point was left to dive to his right as Foo hit Vecchione in the left faceoff circle for the goal.

Foo added an empty-net goal with 23.8 seconds left in the third period to seal the Dutchmen's 3-1 win.
