Union ties with St. Lawrence

SCHENECTADY, NY—The No. 15/16 Union College men's hockey team remained unbeaten in ECAC Hockey play, battling back to tie St. Lawrence 2-2, Friday night at Messa Rink. The Dutchmen move to 8-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play, while the Saints go to 5-4-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the league.
Senior goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulous made 23 saves, including 15 over the final two periods and overtime, to go to 7-0-1 on the season for Union. Spencer Foo (1g, 1a) and Mike Vecchione (2a) each extended their respective point streaks to 10 games, while Sebastian Vidmar (1g, 1a) pushed his point streak to four.
St. Lawrence's Nolan Gluchowski opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 13:30, unloading a slap shot from the top of the right circle for his first of the season. Mike Marnell jammed home a rebound 2:46 later to give the Saints a 2-0 lead after one.
St. Lawrence threatened again early in the second, but Sakellaropoulos turned away six shots on the penalty kill to keep Union within striking distance.
Vidmar cut Union's deficit in half at 6:16 of the second period with his sixth of the season. Vecchione received a long stretch pass from Foo and fed a streaking Vidmar, who drove across the front of the net before sliding a shot past Kyle Hayton's outstretched pad. The assist was Foo's Division I-leading 14th of the season.
The Dutchmen tied the game at 2-2 with a power-play goal at 2:35 of the third when Foo roofed a shot in tight after receiving a perfectly threaded pass from Vidmar. Vecchione picked up his 12th helper of the year on the tally, giving him 26 points on the season.
Hayton made four saves in overtime, while Sakellaropoulos stopped the only shot he faced to preserve the 2-2 tie.
The Dutchmen outshot the Saints 29-26 and went 1-for-6 on the power play, while St. Lawrence finished 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
